Compound Fractures

Ten halves sit in the tray. They make five whole words — every half is used exactly once.

Drag a half into a row, or tap it then tap where it goes. Two halves in a row join up: SNOW + FLAKE. To take one back, drag it to the tray or pick it up and tap the tray.

You are not told which half comes first. Working that out is the puzzle. Where a pair happens to work both ways round, either is accepted — and a hint will mark such a word as belonging to either column rather than claiming one.

There is one way to break all ten into five words. Only one.

Press Check when you think you have it. A wrong check costs 30 seconds and tells you how many pairs are right — never which ones.

Hint also costs 30 seconds. It picks one word at random from those not yet revealed and marks the column it belongs in — a bar on the left for a first half, on the right for a second half. It never tells you who that word pairs with, and you do not get to choose which word you get.

Your time is the only score. The clock pauses whenever you switch away, so thinking time only counts while you are here.
